Who is an Immigration Assistant?

An immigration assistant is one who supports immigration officers in managing and processing immigration-related tasks and documentation. Their primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting immigrants with completing and submitting immigration forms
  • Collecting and organizing required documents,
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Providing information and guidance on immigration procedures and requirements.

They may also assist in scheduling appointments, preparing case files, and communicating with clients to ensure they understand the status and next steps of their applications.

Eligibilty Requirements For The Job Of Immigration Assistant

To be eligible for the position of Immigration Assistant, candidates must meet specific educational qualifications that ensure a strong foundation in essential skills.

Applicants should possess one of the following:

  1. SSCE/NECO or GCE Qualifications:
    • Credits in at least three subjects, including English and Mathematics, obtained in one sitting.
    • Passes in at least two additional subjects.
  2. GCE Ordinary Level Qualifications:
    • Passes in four subjects, including English and Mathematics, obtained in one sitting.
    • Alternatively, passes in five or more subjects, including English and Mathematics, obtained in no more than two sittings.

These educational requirements are crucial to ensure that candidates have the necessary academic background and proficiency in critical subjects to effectively support the immigration program.

Other requirements according to NIS include:

  1. Nigerian Citizenship:
    • Applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth or descent.
  2. Age Requirement:
    • Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 25 years.
  3. Height and Physical Measurements:
    • Males: Must be no less than 1.7 meters in height and have a fully expanded chest measurement of not less than 0.87 meters.
    • Females: Must be no less than 1.64 meters in height.
  4. Health and Fitness:
    • Applicants must be certified by a Government Medical Officer as physically and mentally fit for appointment in the Service.
    • Candidates must not suffer from any form of physical or mental disability.
  5. Financial Integrity:
    • Applicants must be free from any form of financial embarrassment.
  6. Character and Legal Standing:
    • Candidates must be of good character and must not have been found guilty of any criminal offense.
  7. Proof of Origin:
    • Applicants must present a certificate of state of origin signed by the Chairman/Secretary of their Local Government. Certificates endorsed by Liaison officers are not acceptable.

How Much Do The Highest and Lowest NIS Rank Holders Make?

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, which is the highest level in the service, earns up to ₦3 million annually. On the other hand, the starting wage for passport officers, which is the lowest rank, can be as low as 30,000 Naira per month.

As a graduate working in the Immigration Service in Nigeria, you get a minimum monthly pay of ₦150,000, in addition to several other benefits and bonuses that are tied to your position.

How Long Does the NIS Training Last?

NIS uses various training camps for its physical training exercises, which typically last six months. Recruits are subjected to strenuous physical training sessions during the training term to develop their overall resilience, physical fitness, and endurance.

Furthermore, a monthly payment of between N20,000 and N35,000 is made as the Nigeria Immigration Training Allowance. This allowance is only payable while still on the training camp; once the training is completed, the Nigerian Immigration Service will immediately stop paying you the training allowance.

How Do You Apply for Nigeria Immigration Service?

If you are interested in applying for the program,  the recruitment process for the Nigeria Immigration Service is often conducted annually. The recruiting processes are typically advertised in the newspapers as well as on the immigration department’s recruitment website. 

How to apply to the NIS is as follows:

  • Go to the NIS hiring page and select the position you are interested in, such as assistant cadre, inspectorate, or superintendent.
  • After reading and comprehending the job requirements, click “APPLY FOR THIS JOB.”
  • Complete the application form by entering your personal information.
  • Upload a picture of yourself. The image must be a JPG, JPEG, or PNG file with a minimum resolution of 600 x 600 pixels and a maximum size of 200 KB.
  • If you are applying for a superintendent position, include additional information about your physical capabilities, NYSC certificate number, and year of identification.
  • Give them all the information they require regarding your academic background and other acquired knowledge.
  • If you are applying for a superintendent position, tell them about your previous employment. Information about your previous and current employment is required.
  • Upload any other documents you have, along with your birth certificate or other proof of age, health certificate, and proof of Nigerian nationality. The documents must be in PDF format and cannot exceed 200 KB in size.
  • Select “Confirm Data?” to complete the application. There is no way to modify the data once you click “Confirm Data.” Therefore, you need to be more careful and check thoroughly before confirming it.
