There are several ranks in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS). I will be listing them here, but I’m going to place more emphasis on the NCE rank, otherwise known as AII (Assistance Inspector of Immigration).

I shall begin by explaining the duties of NIS before listing the different types of ranks in immigration

What Is the Role of the Immigration Service in Nigeria?
In case you were curious about the specific duties of the NIS, they are a government-run agency that was founded in 1958 after splitting off from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). The NIS’s principal duties are as follows:
- They distribute travel documents to Nigerians both inside and outside of the country.
- They determine who is allowed to enter Nigeria and who is not.
- They monitor the borders and ensure that all individuals enter and exit Nigeria in accordance with the regulations.
Many Nigerians are interested in working for the NIS because it’s a reliable government position with regular pay. In the preceding chapters, I will be talking about the NIS application process. Below is what you need to work with the NIS:
- Must be a citizen of Nigeria.
- You must be in good health.
- A letter stating your health from a government hospital is required.
- You must be debt-free.
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old.
- You must be at least 1.65 meters tall to qualify as a man.
- It is required that women be at least 1.60 meters tall.
- A man’s chest must measure at least 0.87 meters in width.
Types Ranks in Immigration
In the Nigerian Immigration Service, there are basically eight different ranks, beginning with the highest rank, which is Comptroller General Immigration Officer (CGIS), and ending with the lowest rank, which is “Passport Officer (PO).”
#1. General Immigration Service Comptroller (CGIS)
There is only one Comptroller General at a time in the Nigeria Immigration Service, making them the highest ranking officials. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria appoints the person, and their appointment is renewable for another four years, contingent upon their performance during the initial term. This individual is in charge of the general administration and functioning of the immigration service.
#2. Assistant Comptrollers General (ACG)
In the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Deputy or Assistant Comptroller General is the second-highest rank, usually held by officers who have demonstrated their dedication to their roles as the Comptroller General’s aides. They oversee the NIS’s main divisions and are in charge of reporting to the Comptroller General on the organization’s activities. The Deputy Comptroller General has a big impact on the administration and effective operation of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
#3. Superintendent of Immigration (SI)
In the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Assistant Comptroller is the third-highest level, behind the Deputy Comptroller General. They are regarded as senior officers in the agency and are superior to the Superintendent of Immigration. They collaborate closely with higher-ranking officers to maintain the seamless running of the agency, playing a crucial role in the management and operations of the NIS.
#4. Assistant Superintendent Immigration (AIS)
When it comes to hiring recent graduates, this is the lowest rank of officer in the Nigerian Immigration Service. From here, all service officers aspire to higher positions.
#5. Senior Inspector of Immigration (SII)
In the Nigeria Immigration Service, the senior inspector of immigration (SII) is the highest non-commissioned rank. It is also the highest grade that enlistees in the military can obtain. Before reaching this level, or at this rank, all non-commissioned officers retire.
#6. Assistant Inspector of Immigration
I said I was going to place more emphasis on this particular rank because there seem to be a lot of questions around it.
The NCE rank in immigration is Assistant Inspector of Immigration (AII). When you get the rank of Assistant Inspector of Immigration, you will be put at level 6. It is important to note that, depending on your qualifications, you may still be promoted above the level in the future.
NCE Salary in Immigration
The NCE salary in immigration ranges from N65,000 to N100,000, depending on years of service. Those who recently entered the Immigration Service with an NCE certificate are paid approximately N65,000, while those who have served for several years are paid up to N100,000.
In addition to the basic payment, the Immigration Service pays allowances to their employees. They also have a program called Immigration Training Allowance, which is reserved for individuals who are in training.
#7. Assistant for Immigration
The second-lowest tier of the Immigration Service is this one. Though not as good as the lowest level, it is still not as good as the other ranks. After meeting the requirements for promotion, individuals in a lower rank are elevated to this one.
#8. Passports officer (PO)
This is the lowest immigration level. To this extent, non-commissioned employees are recruited and brought up through the ranks.
How Much Do The Highest and Lowest NIS Rank Holders Make?
The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, which is the highest level in the service, earns up to ₦3 million annually. On the other hand, the starting wage for passport officers, which is the lowest rank, can be as low as 30,000 Naira per month.
As a graduate working in the Immigration Service in Nigeria, you get a minimum monthly pay of ₦150,000, in addition to several other benefits and bonuses that are tied to your position.

How Long Does the NIS Training Last?
NIS uses various training camps for its physical training exercises, which typically last six months. Recruits are subjected to strenuous physical training sessions during the training term to develop their overall resilience, physical fitness, and endurance.
Furthermore, a monthly payment of between N20,000 and N35,000 is made as the Nigeria Immigration Training Allowance. This allowance is only payable while still on the training camp; once the training is completed, the Nigerian Immigration Service will immediately stop paying you the training allowance.
How Do You Apply for Nigeria Immigration Service?
If you are interested in applying for the program, the recruitment process for the Nigeria Immigration Service is often conducted annually. The recruiting processes are typically advertised in the newspapers as well as on the immigration department’s recruitment website.
How to apply to the NIS is as follows:
- Go to the NIS hiring page and select the position you are interested in, such as assistant cadre, inspectorate, or superintendent.
- After reading and comprehending the job requirements, click “APPLY FOR THIS JOB.”
- Complete the application form by entering your personal information.
- Upload a picture of yourself. The image must be a JPG, JPEG, or PNG file with a minimum resolution of 600 x 600 pixels and a maximum size of 200 KB.
- If you are applying for a superintendent position, include additional information about your physical capabilities, NYSC certificate number, and year of identification.
- Give them all the information they require regarding your academic background and other acquired knowledge.
- If you are applying for a superintendent position, tell them about your previous employment. Information about your previous and current employment is required.
- Upload any other documents you have, along with your birth certificate or other proof of age, health certificate, and proof of Nigerian nationality. The documents must be in PDF format and cannot exceed 200 KB in size.
- Select “Confirm Data?” to complete the application. There is no way to modify the data once you click “Confirm Data.” Therefore, you need to be more careful and check thoroughly before confirming it
Note also that there is no cost involved in participating in the application process in Nigeria.

What is the NCE level in Nigeria?
NCE is a qualification given to people who have finished a course of study at a Nigerian college of education. The Nigerian Certificate in Education (N.C.E.) is a unique A-level course designed for secondary school graduates or their equivalents.
