The Federal Government of Nigeria offers scholarship awards to Nigerian students every year. These awards come in different types, namely HND, NCE, PG, and UG awards. As a student looking for such an opportunity to complete your studies, this piece is for you. I’ll guide you on how to take advantage of the chance to have all study-related expenses paid for by the Federal Government scholarship program available in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Federal Government Scholarship 2024

The application period for the Federal Government Scholarship Award is currently ongoing. As a result, the Federal Ministry of Education, through the Minister of Education, invites qualified Nigerian students enrolled in Nigerian public tertiary institutions to take part in the 2024 scholarship selection interviews at Nigerian postsecondary schools.

The federal government scholarship award covers the following:

  • Research allowances

What is the value of the Federal Govt Scholarship?

There are different values set for the Nigeria Federal Scholarship depending on the level of study.
For Under-Graduate Scholars the value is N150, 000 per annum
Post-Graduate Scholars is N180, 000 per annum
HND is N100, 000 per annum
NCE is N100, 000 per annum

Eligibility Criteria for Federal Government Scholarship Award

The federal government’s tertiary institution offers the following scholarships to those who meet the following criteria:

  • University Undergraduate Award

A minimum qualification of five (5) distinctions (As and Bs) in the Senior Secondary School Certificates (WASSCE/WAEC) is required for all applicants to be considered for undergraduate degree courses. These distinctions must be earned in subjects that are pertinent to the applicant’s field of study, including English language and mathematics subjects.

It is recommended that certificates for non-African countries have a maximum age of two (2) years, while certificates for African countries should only be one (1) year old. There is also a maximum age range of 17 to 20 years old.

  • Postgraduate Award:

To be eligible for enrollment in postgraduate degree programs, applicants must possess a first degree with a first-class or at least a second-class upper division. The applicants who are prior recipients of foreign awards must have gained at least two (2) years of post-qualification experience or job practice in Nigeria.

The age limit for master’s degrees is 35 years, and the age limit for doctoral degrees is 40 years. All applicants are required to have completed the New York State Certificate Program.

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Award

One of the requirements for this category is that all applicants must be full-time students who are currently in their second year of study at any of the federal or state polytechnics or monotechnics. Additionally, they must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a scale of 4 or its equivalent in the tests that were taken during the previous academic year.

  • Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) Award

All applicants who fall into this category are required to be full-time students who are in their second year of study or higher at any of the Federal or State Colleges of Education. Additionally, they must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a scale of 4 points, or its equivalent in the examinations that were taken during the previous academic year.

Some conditions go along with this award. Here are the most important facts you need to know:

  • It is exclusively available in Nigeria.
  • The effect occurs at the commencement of every academic year.
  • If the scholarship is not utilized within the specified timeframe, it will expire.
  • Any existing Nigerian scholarships held by the applicants are ineligible for this particular award.
  • There is no possibility for modifications to the course or level of the program after it has been chosen. 

How to Apply for The Federal Government Scholarship

Those who fit the requirements are directed to complete the following actions:

  • Visit the Federal Scholarship Board icon on the homepage of the Federal Ministry of Education’s website, www.education.gov.ng
  • After carefully reading the guidelines, fill out the online application.
  • After filling out the application, print it out.

Keep in mind that applying twice will result in disqualification.

Furthermore, you are to send the following documents with the application form:

  • Admission letter from your current university
  • The school identity card
  • Course Registration
  • Two (2) passport-sized photos

Who are the countries that are part of the Federal Scholarship Board?

The Federal Government offers scholarships through the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) for undergraduate studies in Russia, Morocco, Hungary, Egypt, and Algeria. Postgraduate studies can also be done in Russia (for people with a first degree from Russia), China, Hungary, Serbia, and Romania.

What do I need to do to get a BEA scholarship?

As I said earlier, a first degree with at least an upper second-class (2:1) level gets you qualified for the BEA award. In some situations, a lower qualification and enough related experience may be enough.

Who can get a grant from the FSB?

To be able to get the FSB scholarship; your SSCE document must be less than two years old. Also, you must be between 17 and 20 years old. You need to have As and Bs in your main classes, but that shouldn’t stop you from applying.

Can Nigerians study in the UK without the IELTS?

While it is widely utilized, several UK universities provide alternatives, and students can study there without taking the IELTS. It is an important instrument for testing language proficiency, however, there are alternatives for people who want to pursue an education in the UK without taking this specific exam.

Are Nigerian qualifications recognized in the UK?

Yes, the United Kingdom Visa and Immigration Service (UKVI) acknowledges a wide range of English language credentials, including those granted in Nigeria. For example, a Senior School Certificate from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO) with a “Credit Level Pass (C) in English”.

In Nigeria, what organization gives out scholarships?

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) offers a scholarship program in Nigeria. The program began in the 1950s, giving money to qualified Nigerians to study a range of subjects, both inside and outside of Nigeria.

Imperial College London, the University of Leeds, and the University of Aberdeen together make up the three universities in the United Kingdom with which SPDC has formed a collaboration. There are scholarships available for post-graduate Master of Science study that last for one year at these universities.

At each of the three educational establishments, scholarships are available for the following courses:

  • Leeds University: Master of Science in Exploration Electronic/Electrical Engineering Bachelor of Science in Geophysics
  • Imperial College London: Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering and Master of Science in Applied Computational Science and Engineering
  • University of Aberdeen: MSc in Geophysics, MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering for Oil and Gas, and MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering 

Eligibility Criteira and Application Process

Those who want to apply for the SPDC grant must meet the following conditions:

  • Prove your intelligence and leadership ability
  • Have a good enough level of English (at least 6.5 on the IELTS) and meet the language requirements of the college.
  • Have been accepted to study one of the Eligible Courses at the College after following the normal application process
  • Already have a degree that is at least as good as a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree, or plan to have one by the time the scholarship starts.
  • Must have done their National Youth Service. 
  • Must come from Rivers, Imo, Delta, or Bayelsa State of Nigeria and plan to return to Nigeria at the end of the study period.
  • Have not yet had the chance to go to school in the UK or another wealthy country
  • Be between the ages of 21 and 28
  • Live in Nigeria at the moment
  • Must have a valid Nigerian passport
  • People who work for SPDC, SHELL Group of Companies, or the College, or their relatives who work for those companies, or previous employees who quit in less than 5 years will not be able to apply for the scholarships.

Application Process

  • You can only get an application form for a scholarship through the websites of Imperial College London, the University of Leeds, and the University of Aberdeen after being officially accepted by one of those schools.
  • Fill out an application to get into any of the participating colleges and any of the required courses. These universities will look over forms and pick people to meet with SPDC for interviews before they are finally chosen.
  • Scholarship applications must be sent to places that are taking part before the deadline

What Does the SPDC cover?

This scholarship will pay for your education, one round-trip economy ticket from Nigeria to the UK, and some money to help with your living costs.
